These third party motherboards were supposed to be used for creating new computers, but worked great for upgrading.

The only way all the components within a computer can talk with one another is through the motherboard, it is sort of like a multi-lingual translator.

Even external devices connect to the motherboard; video controllers, speakers, or external storage. Most desktop computers have the microprocessing system, memory, and other pertinent parts contained on the motherboard.

These devices are often attached through cards or cables, but many computers have started adding them directly to the motherboard. The chipset is the part that controls the communication between external devices and the computer. This chipset is a group of circuits that act as a single unit. It is part of the motherboard unit, along with power connectors, expansion card slots, sockets, main memory slots, non-volatile memory chips, and a clock generator.

Motherboards not only include the chipset, but also one or more sockets, slots for the main memory, non-volatile memory chips, a clock generator, power connectors, and expansion card slots. Today, almost all motherboards include connectors and logic support for devices that are used often; namely a mouse and keyboard. Gigabyte motherboards have been around since the company started in 1986 and they are still leading the market in graphic accelerators and motherboards.
